This painting, done for the Brown commission, is quite similar to the one done for Walters (CR #372A). The bison herd in the background is drawn in more detail but the main figures are quite similar. Perhaps Miller realized that by 1867, when he painted this picture, that the bison herds were no longer limitless, so he included a significant addition to this version: the buffalo skull at the right.
