This is a variation of Miller’s paintings, Our Camp (CR# 76B and CR# 76C). Here, unlike the other two, the middle ground is highlighted, effectively isolating the five primary figures from the rest of the camp scene which is cast in shadow by the silver-lined clouds that float above. A rider on a sorrel horse to the left of the group replaces Stewart in the other versions, and the mountain backdrop is eliminated. The palette has been darkened as well, lending a somber, almost brooding dimension to the picture.
