This painting, a part of the Walters commission, is a much more orderly and formal presentation of the almost chaotic and crowded scene that Miller first painted (CR #174, private collection). This may be the third version of this scene. Here Miller has produced a more studied and painterly composition that clearly shows the famous mountain man Jim Bridger in the suit of English armor that Stewart had given him. He again uses the compositional technique of a bluff in the foreground, with the rendezvous ground in the middle and distant background.
