This drawing is thought to be the preliminary study for the watercolor of Pierre (CR# 291B) commissioned by William Walters in 1858. The pose shows the young hunter seated facing left to right with his trusty mule at his side. Pierre was an extremely active young man, so this relaxed, contemplative posture belies the energy and sense of wild adventure for which he was well known.
