The red garment tossed on the dirt in the foreground suggests that these hunters were in a hurry to get after the job of bagging a buffalo or two. They have, according to Miller’s account, worked their way down wind from the distant herd and now, unencumbered by extra clothing, sneak on hands and knees toward their prey. If they get close enough to shoot before being noticed, they will each fire together, “filling their game bag at once if lucky.” (Ross, 84)
