Miller described this, one of his favorite Indian scenes, as a bird’s-eye view of an event that could never be matched in the “whole world.” Nowhere else could one witness such a hunt. “The dexterity and grace of the Indians and the thousands upon thousands of Buffalo moving in every direction over an illimitable prairie” made this grand vista unique in hunting annals (Ross, 200). That he was able to chronicle this scene and popularize it so widely through his art gave Miller a special stature within the sizable community of Anglo artists who professed an affinity for accurate portrayals of native Plains people in their animated pursuit of livelihood in the western wilds.
