Miller painted this version of Our Camp in much cooler colors and with a more clearly-defined arrangement of the primary characters than in his 1850 oil of the same scene (CR# 76C). Here Stewart and his campfire are highlighted as if by spotlights on a stage, and the setting sun is not seen at all. The subdued action takes place near the southern shoulder of the Wind River Mountains as the troop moves north toward the rendezvous. It is late in the day, after the wagons have been strategically placed in a circle and the tents have been pitched. Fires for the evening meals bellow smoke into the soft, suffused prairie air, and Stewart looks on from the saddle, no doubt with a sense of accomplishment, at the ordered array.
