This portrait was ostensibly painted from life, based on a Sioux man Miller found particularly respectable as “he could count no coups.” His interest in this subject was, therefore, not his military prowess or high standing among his peers, but rather his handsome face which “approached a classical form.” (Ross, 6) Such romantic comparisons to Greek and Roman antiquity are common throughout Miller’s notes on his western paintings.
