When Miller produced this, possibly his last version of this popular buffalo hunt scene, he used the title of the first finished version, Hunting the Buffalo (also known as A Surround, CR# 353). In his notes for the watercolor, he differentiated between the bay horse on the left and the white horse on the right. The former has been trained for such work, and the rider is comfortable approaching the wounded beast for a final, fatal blow. The latter horse, however, is, according to Miller, “untrained, restive, and in revolt from fright and the smell of carnage, placing the rider hors de combat.” (Bell, 14)
