For Baltimore collector William T. Walters, Miller made a more finished copy of his field sketch, elaborating on the figures, the bison, the rest of the hunt (going on in the left-center background), and the mountains. As with several of the paintings in the Walters commission, Miller seems to have added some distance between the Indians and the wounded animal, as compared with the sketch (CR #358), which somehow diminishes the rawness and spirit of the moment.
