Approaching the Buffalo is the second finished version of this scene, and a close companion to the Walters commission, Approaching Buffalo (CR# 371B). Miller wrote about the two works in approximately the same way. He concluded here that this method of hunting the buffalo is only occasionally employed as “the attack with lances” is the favored mode, because “it affords more excitement, and gives the Buffalo, for whom the Trappers have great admiration, a fairer chance.” (Bell, 18)
