By the looks of the mounts in the foreground, the hunters in this and other versions of this scene may be Antoine, who rode a white horse like Stewart, and Pierre, who favored a mule. Miller supplied a slightly different commentary for this version of the scene painted for Alexander Brown than he had about a decade earlier for William Walters. Here, he mentions that, “As they carry double-barreled rifles, and, in their lingo, shoot ‘plum centre,’ a Buffalo or two is often secured.” (Bell, 144)
