A Surround

  • Much of the action in Miller’s known large Hunting the Buffalo (CR# 353) occurs on the open plains above a large sink hole in which several Indians have cornered a bunch of buffalo and are attacking them vigorously. The activity on the upper stretch of prairie is the subject of this sketch. The drawing is probably a preliminary study for the monumental canvas. Its depiction of horses in motion may in part provide the conceptual basis for the finished work for the castle. “The anatomy of the horses is superb,” concluded one critic after studying the big oil.
