Miller, though having painted several similar narratives, is not known to have described this scene in his writings. The other versions of this pictorial drama, however, appear to involve a combat between Sioux and Snake Indians. This particular wash drawing relates closely to a smaller study titled On the Warpath – Running Fight (CR# 379D). Here though, the warrior is armed only with a knife and a spear, which requires him to avoid arrows as best he might until he can ride closer to his adversary.
