Though the present title of this painting describes the subject as a maiden, Miller’s narrative about a companion work (CR# 297) refers to its subject as male. The artist wrote, “The bow he carries in his hand is remarkable.” (Ross, 7; Rough Draughts, 24) The two figures take the same pose and don similar clothing and accessories. Perhaps these are depictions of the same rendezvous attendee, a young man from the Pacific Northwest Coast?
