Charging into a herd of antelope was a pretty ineffective method of hunting the wily creatures. They could outrun a good horse and even herds of hundreds, as seen here, could scatter in a flash. Even so, adapting a composition of galloping hunters approaching a vast open meadow (CR# 131B); Miller inserted a milling group of antelope in this sketch for one of William Walters’ commissioned watercolors (CR# 131A).
